About mYak Tibetan Fibers

mYak Tibetan Fibers are born in Tibet and crafted in Italy, offering the finest Tibetan fibres for your creative projects. Founded after discovering the incredible softness of baby yak undercoat, mYak formed a cooperative with local nomadic communities on the Tibetan Plateau, establishing a sustainable production chain that respects the traditions of the land, its people, and the animals.

Handcrafted in Italy

mYak yarns are handcrafted in Italy's Biellese area, renowned for textile excellence. This combination of Tibetan fibres and Italian craftsmanship ensures the highest artisanal quality while supporting traditional livelihoods on the Plateau.

Baby Yak Down

Baby yak down is collected during the natural spring molt, creating an incredibly soft, warm, and lightweight fibre. It's hypoallergenic with exceptional insulating properties, perfect for garments that are both cosy and breathable.

Two plies are gently twisted together to create a delicate lace weight yarn perfect for shawls and accessories. Used double, it's warm and lustrous, lightweight and breathable, making it ideal to wear through the seasons.

mYak obtains three natural shades; chocolate, desert, and oatmeal, which are dyed to create a palette of soft colours that evoke the five elements of nature. Light colours are very rare and precious. mYak only dyes on the natural basis with no bleaching or decolouring, so each colour varies from season to season depending on the natural fibres, this is the beauty of working with nature.

Tibetan Cashmere

mYak's Cashmere is sourced from the spring combing of Tibetan cashmere goats, raised by families in some of the most extreme and impoverished mountain regions of the Tibetan Plateau. Unlike most cashmere on the market, which has a devastating environmental impact, mYak sources from sustainably managed small herds in rocky mountain areas that protect the delicate ecosystem from desertification.

With a fineness below 14.5 microns, this is truly one of the softest and strongest cashmeres you can find. Tibetan Cashmere is perfect for creating exquisite, cosy pieces, whether you're strolling through city streets or curling up by the fire.

Tibetan Cloud Wool

Tibetan Cloud Wool is 100% Tibetan sheep wool, ethically sourced and traceable back to the flock. It comes exclusively from an ancient breed of Tibetan sheep that roam freely on the grasslands of the Tibetan Plateau at an altitude of over 4,000 metres.

This unique product has characteristics closer to fine fibres like cashmere and baby yak than to wool, not at all scratchy. It's a pleasure to knit with and to wear, with beautiful stitch definition as an added bonus.

Out of deep respect for animal welfare, nomads shear the sheep by hand in the traditional way that has been used for centuries. The wool is collected following the natural life rhythms of the animals and the people who raise them. The Tibetan sheep are a very strong breed adapted to rough environmental conditions, and mYak has chosen one of the poorer semi-desert areas for sourcing this collection to bring better income to these communities.

Sustainability & Ethics

mYak follows traditional Tibetan pastoral practices guided by nomadic herders who move across the grasslands, ensuring the longevity of healthy pastures. By having the fibre spun in Italy, they preserve the daily way of life and natural environment of Tibetan people, where each gesture is a ritual interweaving human life with nature and animals.

mYak opposes short lived fashion, catering instead to crafters who create personal, unique pieces. Their fibres offer artisanal quality destined to last and become cherished heirlooms for future generations.

Why We Love mYak

We stock mYak because their yarns represent the perfect intersection of luxury, ethics, and quality. The baby yak down, Tibetan cashmere, and Tibetan Cloud wool create finished garments with incredible softness and drape, while their commitment to supporting Tibetan herding communities and preserving ancient traditions aligns with our values of responsible sourcing and sustainability.
