Retrosaria - Rosa Pomar

About Retrosaria - Rosa Pomar

Retrosaria Rosa Pomar produces and sells heritage wool yarns made exclusively from Portuguese wool. Founded by Rosa Pomar and based in Lisbon, the company is dedicated to preserving Portugal's sixteen different sheep breeds, some of which are critically endangered after being progressively replaced by foreign, more productive breeds.

Philosophy & Values

Retrosaria creates manufactured yarn in collaboration with small manufacturers, breeders associations and shepherds. The company also commissions small batches of artisan yarns like Bucos, Alfeire, Nordeste and Mirandesa, which are scoured, teased, carded and spun by hand in small villages around the country. Every skein connects knitters directly to Portuguese shepherds and the rich textile heritage of Portugal.

Yarn Characteristics

All Rosa Pomar yarns are minimally processed: non-superwash, not bleached, and contain no silicone-based softeners. The woolen spun yarns contain traces of vegetable matter, preserving the wool's natural character and integrity. These yarns offer authentic textures, excellent stitch definition, and the warmth that comes from wool processed with care and respect for its natural properties.

Sustainability & Animal Welfare

Retrosaria's wool comes from free range sheep, and mulesing is not practiced in Portugal. By supporting local shepherds and using regional mills, the company maintains short supply chains and preserves traditional livelihoods. The focus on native Portuguese breeds helps maintain biodiversity and supports the survival of critically endangered sheep populations across Portugal.

Why We Love Retrosaria

We're proud to carry Retrosaria yarns because they represent everything we value: authenticity, transparency, and respect for craft traditions. Each skein tells the story of Portugal's pastoral landscapes, endangered sheep breeds, and the skilled hands; both shepherds and artisan spinners, that transform fleece into beautiful yarn. Knitting with Retrosaria means supporting a more sustainable, ethical, and culturally significant wool industry.
